United Nations Truce Supervision Organization Welcomes New Deputy Chief of Staff

UNTSO DCOS Transfer of Authority

Jerusalem, 18 February 2026 – The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) today marked the official transfer of authority of the Deputy Chief of Staff during a ceremony held at Mission Headquarters in Jerusalem.

Incoming DCOS

Colonel Zhengjiang Wang of China assumed his duties as Deputy Chief of Staff on 18 February 2026, succeeding Colonel Hubert Pavlic of Austria, who completed a two-year assignment with the Mission.

In his new role, Colonel Wang will support the Chief of Staff in overseeing UNTSO’s operational activities across the region, coordinating military observers, and ensuring effective liaison with host authorities and partner missions. He brings more than 23 years of military service, including prior deployments in multinational operations and senior staff appointments within China People’s Liberation Army. Colonel Wang holds a Master’s degree in Communication and Information Systems, and has completed advanced command and staff training.

In his remarks, Colonel Wang reaffirmed his commitment to the Mission’s mandate. “It is an honour to serve with the men and women of UNTSO. I look forward to working closely with our partners and stakeholders to continue supporting peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Outgoing DCOS

Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of Mission and Chief of Staff expressed appreciation for Colonel Pavlic’s dedicated service, leadership, professionalism and steadfast commitment to UNTSO.

Colonel Pavlic, who joined UNTSO in 2024, played a key role in enhancing inter-mission cooperation and reinforcing operational planning processes in support of stability efforts across the area of operations.

Mission mandate

Established in 1948, UNTSO is the United Nations’ first peacekeeping operation. Its military observers observe ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in support of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and engages with regional authorities.

The Mission reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter including impartiality, as it continues to carry out its mandate in support of peace and security in the Middle East.
